Graceful in defeat

I was at my favorite pasttime when at home - browsing channels - when I stopped at Star Vijay. There was this program Airtel Super Singer going on that.. apparently, the final 1 was over and they were shortlisting 4 out of 5 for the final #2...I am not a regular viewer, in fact, this was the first time I saw this.. so no idea of the format.. but that doesnt matter for this blog... So, this lady Ranjani and one more person (forgot the name) were left (three had been shortlisted already when I started viewing the program)....and the guy won more votes (8k+ more than Ranjani).. Ranjani had lost.. so what I thought.. this is normal..but hold on.. this is not normal. The gal did not cry after losing. Not even a touch of sadness, just acceptance. Perfectly okay I thought.. Maybe she did not perform well and hence lost..but the way that gal carried herself..She did not care a damn that she had lost. She thanked all the judges, all the viewers, all those who voted for her, etc.. And told very clearly, I want to become a playback singer and I am sure I will become one. Thanks to Airtel Super singer for making me realize my potential, that I can sing in front of so many people.....

I had a tear in my eye - believe me - when she said that. In the age where we are, where participants, and even judges (remember simbu?) who want to cry when thrown into a tight corner, see this lady ! She cares a damn about being eliminated. Okay, others have done well. I have absolutely no problems with accepting this defeat. The jury asked her to sing another song (non-competitive) and she sang some song.. not a great song, but she did a good job of singing it...Then, other finalists had a great request (good spirit guys.. keep it up) Is it not possible to have Ranjani in the finals also? (I dont know what happened after that.. power cut) but I was impressed with this lady and it set me thinking.

How many of us are so graceful in accepting defeat? Started thinking about the defeats I have seen and how the losers have reacted.. The best reaction I have seen is the Federer reaction in the 2008 US Open.. well, he definitely was graceful, but the human being in him came out and how unexpectedly for all of us? I remember Vivian Richards crying and falling to the ground after his team lost the world cup (I guess it was 1987), but both that was more an emotional outburst than the topic of this blog (losing gracefully)... Can you think of any graceful losers? Add in the comments section pls!

Actually would want to get this video on youtube (this program happened only today and so youtube might have it in a day or two) and show to my kids. See, this is how you react when you lose? No point in crying, but going back and working out on what went wrong and trying to correct it. Btw, would certainly love to know Ranjani's sunsign. My guess would be Capricorn!
